VSA 2010 Oberlin Bass Workshop

“Everyone teaches, everyone learns”

This principle set out by Vahakn Nigosian has been the basis of all of the at Oberlin College sponsored by the Violin Society of America.

With this in mind the first ever VSA Oberlin workshop devoted to the double bass will take place at Oberlin College June 6-12, 2010. At this workshop we hope that people who make, repair, restore and play the double bass will come together to share their experience, knowledge and ideas. While we anticipate that most of the participants will be professionals, the workshop is open to anyone with an interest in making repairing, restoring or playing the double bass. We hope that everyone will leave business and competitive concerns at home with the belief that by helping each other, we raise the standards of our profession to the benefit of all.

If you’re interested, read on below but first some important business!
To register, please contact me by e-mail: jamespeterham@shaw.ca with name, address and phone number. I will forward your information to Oberlin College and they will contact you about fees etc.

The Workshop Series at David Gage streamed on mikesmasterclasses.com

Last year's lineup included Ron Carter, Francois Rabbath, Ben Wolfe, Drew Gress, Jim Stinnett and Tim Cobb presenting exciting, inspiring and informative workshops on such topics as  "Introduction to The New Technique and The Art of The Bow" (Rabbath) to "Audition Techniques" (Cobb).

The great news is that it is not too late to see any and all of those workshops!! Over the last year we have been working with mikesmasterclasses.com to stream The Workshop Series at David Gage String Instruments in an interactive format on the Internet. Eddie Gomez Masterclass Video

An Evening With Eddie Gomez is the latest release in the Thirty-Six Walker Street Prods./ David Gage String Instruments Master Class Series. Produced in collaboration with Telling Pictures and Filmed live at the David Gage's shop by Academy Award Winning Director, Rob Epstein, this DVD is a landmark venture in instructional/performance video for bass.

Eddie Gomez is one of the most recognized names in jazz bass. His solo works, as well as his collaborations with luminaries such as Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Paul Bley, are an important part of the cannon of jazz music. In this video, he engages a live audience of professional bassists, amateurs, students, and enthusiasts.

Rob Epstein won Best Feature-length Documentary Oscars for "The Times of Harvey Milk" (1984) and "Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt" (1989). His work on this project is both subtle and sure. He leaves Mr. Gomez the room he needs to express himself while maintaining a compelling perspective on the music and spontaneous discussion.

New Czech-Ease Acoustic Bass Website!!

We have been planning for a while to develop a series of mini-websites for each of the David Gage products -- the Realist Acoustic Transducer, The Czech-Ease Acoustic Road Bass, The Metropolitan Carbon Fiber Double-Bass Bow and the Gage Travel Trunk for Bass and Cello.

First of the bat is the Czech-Ease mini-website (actually, it's not that mini, and it's still growing...)  The Czech-Ease™ is a full sounding bass with an abbreviated body that makes it exponentially more portable than its full-bodied cousins without losing the true-bass sound.  This is where you can find out who is playing it, what they are saying about it, where you can see it, try it out, buy it or rent it -- we now have dealers in the U.S., Canada and Europe. There are also pictures, video and a brand new FAQ.

Czech-Ease websiteIf you already are a Czech-Ease user, we would love to hear from you – what you think about it, how you use it, etc. Also we would love any video or mp3 of the Czech-Ease in action...We will be adding submission forms for this purpose on the Czech-Ease website; till then you can email us.

So, czech-out the Czech-Ease website and let us know what you think!!

You can also visit our on-line store for more information on the
Czech-Ease Acoustic Road Bass
